At least 7,809 people were killed and and 9,039 were injured in 5,629 road accidents across the country in 2021, Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity said on Sunday.
Mozammel Hoque Chowdhury, secretary general of the organisation, unveiled the Annual Road Accident Report-2021 at a press conference held at Sagar-Runi Auditorium of Dhaka Reporter’s Unity (DRU) this morning.
Besides, at least 396 people were killed and 134 others injured in 402 incidents on railway tracks in 2021, the report said.
On waterways, at least 311 died, 578 injured and 544 went missing in 182 incidents, the report added.
Reckless driving, risky overtaking, dilapidated road shapes, unfit vehicles, unskilled drivers, using mobile or headphone by the drivers while running vehicle, drinking liquor, grabbing footpath and lack of awareness among road users have been shown as the main reason in the report behind the road crashes.
